Malteza's Stone Garden

FROM THE INTERPRETATION OF OUTLOOK TO GEOLOGICAL CARTOGRAPHY

AND... TO THE GEOLOGICAL HISTORY OF PORTUGAL

For over a thousand years, Chinese and Japanese have sought out small Zen stone gardens to meditate on the true meaning of Life, while observing the beauty of the lines traced in the gravel and sand that surrounds the rocks scattered in the garden.
The Jardim de Pedra das Maltezas has the outcrops but… it doesn't have the lines! The challenge here is precisely to build the lines.
By interpreting the existing outcrops, it becomes possible to mark the lines that represent the geological limits on a map, building the GEOLOGICAL MAP. But the challenge does not end here… the interpretation of geological maps is the means to penetrate the most distant geological past, and the JARDIM DE PEDRA DAS MALTEZAS is no exception. The existing outcrops were collected over the years, from places where we have been, and are now placed according to Portugal's geological past.
After all, the map of JARDIM DE PEDRA DAS MALTEZAS is the key to understanding Portugal from Before History…
