...a bit of history…

If currently Science is produced mainly in Universities and Research Laboratories, there were times when convents/monasteries appeared not only as places of worship, but also as temples of Knowledge. Why not take advantage of these old spaces by adapting them to new requirements. The CCVEstremoz occupies an important part of the Convento das Maltezas.

Convento das Maltezas

On the east side of the large square in downtown Estremoz (Rossio Marquês de Pombal) stands the building called Convento das Maltezas or S. João da Penitência. Classified as a National Monument, in particular the Cloister of Misericórdia – this is where the Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz is located.

It is a 16th century building in the Gothic-Manueline style, in which predominantly regional materials were applied in its construction, with emphasis on the marble from Estremoz, in the masonry and tiles.

There are several architectural and artistic aspects that deserve a special look.
