Geologist's Day

Do you know how many barrels of oil are consumed in Portugal per day?
Do you know the contribution of the Mining Industry to the Portuguese GDP?
Did you know that inside the Earth there is a layer made up of Iron and Nickel?
And now...
Know that in 2015 the centenary of the Theory of Continental Drift was celebrated!

In order to answer these and many other questions, the profession of geologist is celebrated on the consecrated "Geologist's Day".
But then, what do geologists do and what is their importance in our society?
Geologists play a key role in researching knowledge about the functioning of planet Earth; These contribute, for example, to the exploitation of Energy Resources, the basis for the development of our industries and society; Mineral Resources, fundamental to new technologies; Non-metallic resources, essential for civil construction; Hydrogeological resources, vital for our lives. Other functions include minimizing geological risks caused by earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, landslides or contamination of soils and aquifers; Analyzing its scope of intervention, we found that society with material goods as we know it, has been supported in part by the work and research carried out in the field of geosciences!

The Geologist's Day takes place under the aegis of the Geological Society of Portugal and the Association of Geologists of Portugal and also counts with the participation of several entities. Throughout the day, which may or may not be extended to the weekend, depending on the date itself, various activities will be held in Estremoz, available to the general public, in an attempt to raise awareness and value this professional, as well as, to clarify the importance of this area of Science.
